Sunset Bowl Captures Third Title
The Sunset Bowl team of John Walczek, Dan Litewski, Dean Bakkum, Rob Cunningham and Jim Erickson captured their third consecutive Lake County BA Proprietor Team Challenge title at Brunswick Zone – Fountain Square on January 31, 2010. The Sunset team came up big in the final game qualifying to erase a 72-pin deficit to the BZ-Hawthorn team and claim the third and final spot in the step ladder finals where they met the Bertrand Lanes team of Mike Geiger, Bob Romani, Dan Dimitroff, Ryan Schmeling and Dan Krostal in the semi-final match. Sunset Bowl jumped out to an early lead in the two-game match bowling 220 to the Bertrand Lanes team score of 177, but Bertrand Lanes came back in the second game bowling 212 to Sunset’s 198 for a total of Sunset 418 – Bertrand 389. Next up was the top seeded Fair Haven Lanes team of Mark Raymond Jr., Dan Farris, Jim Gochis, Davey Rosen and Jamie Kaiser in the championship match. In game one both teams had a little trouble lining up and after the first game Sunset Bowl held a narrow 15-pin lead (192-177). In game two, after five frames the teams were nearly deadlocked, the Sunset team drew on their previous experience in this event and each member rolled a strike on their final shot to end the game with a seven string and a 249 game to finish off with Fair Haven 441 (192-249) - 358 (177-181) to complete their run to their third consecutive victory. The star studded field drew teams from eight centers (Antioch Lanes, Bertrand Lanes, BZ-Fountain Square, BZ-Hawthorn, Fair Haven Lanes, Lakes Bowl, Lakeside Lanes and Sunset Bowl) and one team that represented the Lake County BA Board of Directors which included 12 Lake County BA Hall of Famers and 4 Illinois BA Hall of Fame members. The highest scoring individual game of the tournament was fired by Davey Rosen (278) of the Fair Haven Lanes team. Top Baker team game went to Lakes Bowl with a 279. The Lake County BA will hold the fourth Lake County BA Proprietor’s Team Challenge in January of 2011.

Kulick Wins TOC over Barnes
Kelly Kulick of Union, NJ made sports history by beating Chris Barnes in the final match of the PBA Tournament of Champions. Kulick becomes the first woman to win a PBA national event and a major event at that. Kulick knocked off “Major” Maki (nice pants) in the semi-final 227-223 then took care of Barnes who was never a factor in the match after the third frame. Kulick won $40,000 and a two-year exemption for the PBA tour. Congrats Kelly!

Lee Stops Knoth to Earn Masters Victory
John Lee of Mundelein battled his way from the eighth seed to claim the 2009 Lake County BA Masters at Lakes Bowl on December 13, 2009 to take home the top prize of $250, a paid entry to the 2010 USBC Masters and $500 expense reimbursement. Lee met Jeff Knoth in the final match of the day. The final score for the two game match was 428-368, but the match was much closer than the final score as Knoth had back to back open frames in the 6th and 7th which was all Lee needed to grab the lead for good. High game of the day was rolled by Lake County BA Hall of Fame member Mike Jacobs (277), who also lead qualifying with a six game average of 224.33 (1,346 pins). The field of 19 bowlers averaged 186.7 on the challenging 2009 USBC Masters pattern. The Lake County BA would like to thank Lakes Bowl for hosting the 2009 Masters, Miller Lite for co-sponsoring and to the participants. The 2010 Masters is tentatively scheduled for December 12, 2010 at a center to be announced later in the year.

Teach an Old Dog (Ball) a New Trick
Rick Moudy of the Sunset Fellowship league at Sunset Bowl wouldn’t be what you would say on the cutting edge of bowling technology. On November 24, 2009 he fired up his trusty Dick Weber Five-Star that he purchased in 1977 (one would have to think that most of the house balls are newer then this one) and proceeded to roll his personal best with games of 257-300-245 for an 802 set. So the next time you stroll past one of the classic balls from days gone by, maybe you should rethink your selection for tonight’s competition.
If you have any interesting tidbits about one of your league bowlers that you’d like to share with your fellow members, just send a note to lakecountyba@sbcglobal.net and we’ll share their feat with everyone.
